There’s something unforgettable about getting something new. Especially when the packaging is just right. Think back to the smooth, matte finish of an Apple box, or the sleek pull of a new makeup palette or gaming console. That moment of unboxing? It’s… emotional. It’s carefully crafted to unveil an experience. I’ve always wanted to be on the other side of that moment, designing the very packaging that makes a lasting impression before the product is even touched.

Turning ideas…

After months of planning, ideating, and making revisions for the packaging of our new disposable vape line, our team finally received the physical packaging that we had created for our latest disposable vapes.

When I held the physical packaging in my hand for the first time, I truly felt the reward of what it was like to be on the other side of a brand new product. Spearheading this design process was not only fun, but super rewarding. Through many versions and editions, we put out a beautifully presented product that our team (and our entire company) is proud to put on shelves.

CBD with 0.00% THC

I had the pleasure of being brought on to help this company when it was just an idea about a good cause.

This company was created by first responders, FOR first responders. As we know, many of our nation’s heroes have demanding jobs that are tough on their bodies and minds, but as federal employees, they’re not allowed to utilize the medicinal effects of cannabis, including CBD.

That’s because most CBD is not 100% THC-free. But Respond Wellness guarantees CBD with zero THC thanks to their commitment to advocating for the mental and physical well-being of first responders by providing access to the great plant.

Respond Wellness provides a line of CBD products tailored for first responders, with a focus on being THC-free. Tested to not only work, but also pass a drug test with flying colors!

Now I get to see their business booming as the product design portion is over and I simply regularly maintain their website!

The packaging had to be clean and gender neutral in order to communicate health and wellness for ALL first responders. The owners wanted to go for the color-coded vibe so that their customers can easily identify each product on the shelves. And… voila!

COMPANION CBD FOR PETS BY FAIRWINDS CBD

While I can’t currently post the final desisgn that went to print, I’m happy to add the other top finalists for the official packaging design. These designs were created for an upcoming fish flavored CBD tincture that was made to calm and soothe pets, specifically cats.

Option 1: BLUE AND BRIGHT

The most soothing colors are blue and green. These colors also build trust! What better colors to use for CBD packaging? The brightened color of the logo brings a playful punch of energy, just like your fur babies do. The dead fish cartoon graphic in the background is a nod to the flavor.

1. INSPIRATION AND ORIGINAL CONCEPT

The original source of inspiration was the famous print: “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” This is because this artwork is often said to represent the fact that life will always present humans with another wave (a metaphor for harship), but we must find the strength within to push forward. This is the perfect mindset for a pain relief topical.

Option 2: PURRRRFECTION

I took the same approach of using blue to depict a sense of calm. I used recognizable iconography of “The Creation of Adam” from the celing the Sistine Chapel. I inserted a kitten to add a playful mood to the design; this also depicts the absolute perfection that most of us see when we look at our pets.

Instead of using another soothing color, I chose a yellow tile design to compliment the fresco craquelure.

2. MATCHING THE IDEA TO THE CURRENT BRANDING

Not only did we want to avoid directly copying a work of art, but we realized we had to base the design of this product to fit within the existing product line. This took a few rounds of revision, but we succeeded in connecting our new idea to the company’s visual brand itself. (PICTURED BELOW)

3. FINAL RENDITIONS

We were able to visually simplify the original design to stray further from the original work of art and more towards “Fairwinds.”

“WAVE” HIGH THC TOPICAL CREAM

The very product that originally put Fairwinds on the map remains a top-five topical for Washington State’s quarterly sales to this day. That product is known as “FLOW Cream,” which eventually developed into an entire product line.

One important yet ignored sector of Washington’s cannabis industry? High THC products specifically for medical patients. That’s where Fairwinds stepped in.
